Hoping to provide everybody the resources and knowledge to know how to fight their personal injury lawsuit, Seattle car accident attorney Jason Epstein discusses the basics of buying auto insurance.

Along with basic car insurance, there are two types of other ways to cover yourself that I strongly encourage you to purchase. The first is “Personal Injury Protection,” better known as PIP. This is “no-fault” coverage that will pay your medical bills, along with lost wages and benefits for a car accident, no matter who caused it. In other words, if you have PIP coverage, you can see whatever doctor you want, even if you caused the accident. A common amount for PIP coverage is $10,000, but it can go all the way up to $50,000. PIP must be offered by the insurance companies, but you do not have to accept it. In my opinion, this is coverage that you should absolutely have, and you should have as much of it as you can afford.

The other type of coverage that is not required, but should still have, is called “Uninsured/Under-insured motorist coverage,” better known as UM/UIM. Basically, uninsured motorist coverage protects you in an accident where the at-fault driver does not have insurance. The under-insured part of this coverage is for accidents where the at-fault driver does not have enough insurance to cover your damages. The amount of uninsured and under-insured motorists are increasing as the economy continues to struggle, so it is crucial that you get as much of this type of coverage as you can. In the grand scheme of things, it is not that expensive either. Getting 10x more coverage does not mean you have to pay 10x more. Ultimately, the more coverage you get, the better the deal is for you.
